The Wind

Today in Science we were talking about the Wind and how it is connected to the weather. We started off the exploration by looking at a picture of a palm tree on a beach which ignited a discussion about the wind. We talked about times where we have seen the wind affect something by either blowing very hard or only a little bit. The discussion also covered us talking about whether the wind is helpful or harmful. We came to the conclusion that it can be both.
- Nataya suggested that could be helpful if a tree is blocking your way and the wind could blow it out of the way.
- Taylor said that it can be helpful to make windmills spin.
- Will suggested that it can be harmful as it can blow trees down which could break things.

We then began to talk about ways in which the wind could be measured. The questions was posed to the class about if they could think of a tool that they have seen which measures the wind. This was a tricky question which nobody was able to answer so Mr. Donaldson showed us a picture to jog our memories....

After seeing this picture the students noticed that they had seen them before...
- On the side of the road
- At the airport
- Near the beach

Mr. Donaldson showed us another picture of a more complicated wind measuring tool called an Anemometer which spins either fast or slow depending on the speed of the wind.

We then set to work creating our own windsock to test the strength of the wind around the school. However we had a problem as we didn't know what material to use to make the best wind sock. To solve the problem we chose three materials of differing thickness (crepe paper, printer paper, and cardboard). After choosing one of the three (ensuring all three where being tested) we attached a strip of our material to some paddlepop sticks using some glue. Then went for a walk around the school to test them out and see which one indicated the strength of the wind the best.

Numbers Competion

Today we had a competition to see who was the fastest at organising the numbers 1-10 in the correct order. To make the competition exciting we had to make sure that we had buzzers for the contestants to press when they had finished arranging the numbers. Secondly we had game show music playing in the background to get the best atmosphere. Lastly it was imperative that the audience (the rest of the class) cheered for the contestants as they competed. It was a lot of fun as each person in the class had a turn to come up and verse two other contestants. We continued playing until we had a winner. Will was our overall winner and it was amazing to see how well everyone could put their numbers into the correct order!! (Even Mrs. Groch got involved!)

Premiers Reading Challenge launch and Book Fair - 6 March!

It's Here! The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) starts on Monday 5 March and to launch the reading initiative the school is holding a Book Fair.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the Learning Hub Tuesday - Thursday 6-8^th March from 8.00-830 and 2.30-3.00.

Your children will be enrolled on the PRC website and your child will be able to log in and start recording books read from 6 March.

K-2 students – you can read the books on your own, read them with someone, or someone can read them to you. If your child is reading simple chapter books they can attempt the 3-4 challenge – please let Mrs Duffy know if this is your child.

3-6 students – you must read the books on your own, but someone can help you choose them.

The Learning Hub team is gathering all the PRC books we hold so you will easily find some titles with us but a visit to your local library will be required to access the vast majority of books – there are over 1500 book titles for each age group!

Students will receive a Certificate for each year they complete the Challenge:

                                             

The online Student Reading Record must be completed by 31 August 2018 (11.59) to complete the Challenge.

If your child meets the challenge target, their certificate will have their name and school printed on it and the Honour Roll has names listed by alphabetical order but does not mention your school name. 

If you do not want your child to receive a certificate or be on the Honour Roll, you must not enter any books in your online Student Reading Record.

By entering this challenge, your child is declaring that they have read the books entered in accordance with their school year rules.

THRASS Detective

We having been enjoying GoNoodle so much over the past few days as it has helped us to get moving in the classroom in a fun way.

After having fun with GoNoodle we played a game called THRASS Detective where a line of the THRASS chart was placed onto the whiteboard. Once random person in the class would be chosen to be the detective and would have to leave the classroom. While they were gone the rest of us would try and trick the detective by removing a picture or swapping some pictures around. However no matter how much we mixed it up they always figured it out. Either by singing the song out loud or checking our big THRASS chart in the classroom.
To ensure that we were noticing we put on some detective glasses and a detective hat. 

My Heritage

This term in History we are learning about the past. We have started our learning by focusing on ourselves and our history. On Friday I will place a sheet of paper asking questions about your child's family history mainly focusing on what country our parents and grandparents are from. I have insereted the page here as well for you
If you could complete that over the weekend and return it to me by Wednesday the 28th of February I would be most grateful. Also to help in our learning about the past if you could send in two pictures of your child when they were younger. Preferably one of them as a baby and the other of them as a toddler. These will help with our class discussions and a few activities that we have planned. Thank you in advance.

Year 6 Ice Cream Fundraiser

Teddy Bears Picnic Game

This afternoon in Mathematics we played a game where we focused on practising and developing our counting skills. We did this by playing a game called Teddy Bears Picnic. In this game we would split into pairs and take turns to drop some items form a height onto the game mat...

Where we would then count to see how many items landed on our picnic rugs. Whoever had the most was the winner of that round. We continued doing this, taking turns dropping the objects. 

Everyone listened very well and followed instructions which was lovely to see.
