Money Money Money!

This week in Maths we are focussing on developing our knowledge of money, most specifically the Australian coins. On Monday afternoon we looked at each coin in depth and discussed the pictures that were on each coin to see how each one was different. During this discussion and exploration, we talked about the difference between the silver coins and the gold coins.
Which one is worth more?
How do we know which one is worth more?
Does having more coins mean that you have more money?

It was an interesting conversation with some students positing that the bigger the coin the more it is worth with the smaller coins being worth less. We discovered though that this couldn't be true when considering all the coins because both the 1 dollar and 2 dollar coin are smaller than the 50 cent coin. By the end of the discussion, we had come to the conclusion that we had to take into consideration what the coin is made of and realised that cents are smaller than dollars. Briefly, we also talked about how cents can make up dollars if you have enough coins.
